The Washington Post: Berliner endorsed by Montgomery Sierra Club in county executive race

The Montgomery County Sierra Club endorsed council member Roger Berliner (D-Potomac-Bethesda) Monday in the race for county executive, citing the need create new programs and policies to address climate change.

The environmental organization, which has 6,000 members across Montgomery, also endorsed council president Hans Riemer (D-At Large) and candidates Evan Glass, Will Jawando and Danielle Meitiv for the four at-large council seats on the ballot in the June 26 primary, which in deep-blue Montgomery County usually determines the winner of the general election.

The other three at-large incumbents — Marc Elrich and George Leventhal, both of whom are running for county executive, and council member Nancy Floreen — cannot run for their seats again because of term limits.

The Sierra Club endorsed Ben Shnider for the District 3 council race, council member Nancy Navarro (D-Mid-County) in District 4 and council member Tom Hucker (D-Eastern County) in District 5.

“We are excited about the prospects of our endorsed candidates focusing their skills, experience, and knowledge on making our county a national model for how local governments address the climate emergency facing our planet,” Dave Sears, chair of the Montgomery Sierra Club, said in a statement.
